Our Lady is the model for bringing God's will to our lives!

The Solemnity of the Annunciation, when “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” took place nine months before Christmas.

God arranged it so that his incarnation, sending us His Son, Jesus, was dependent on Mary giving her “fiat”: “Be it done unto me

according to thy word.”

Do you ever think of Mary’s fiat and wonder if you could have the courage to say to God “May it be done to me as you say”?

In Latin, the word fiat means “let it be done.” Mary’s fiat was an immediate acceptance of and consent to God’s will for her life: “May it be done to me.” Her yes was total and complete; she held nothing of herself back from God. She sets the example for all of us, teaching us how we should respond to God’s call in our lives.

Mary’s Fiat should inspire us to desire to learn how to say yes to God and to follow God more faithfully in our lives. Below are a couple of ways to start today learning how to say YES to God, as Mary did in her life.

  • Start your day with a prayer (like the Morning Offering), asking God to bless you and to help you to live the day according to His will.

  • Take a few minutes at the beginning of the day to ask yourself some questions.

    • What can I do today to live my life as God wants me to live it?

    • How can I be more loving today to God?

    • How can I be more loving today to my husband/wife/friends/teachers?

    • How can I be more loving today to my kids/parents?

    • How can I be more loving today to others I encounter?

  • Plan moments of self-reflection throughout the day. This does not need to take a long time. Take just a minute a few times each day to evaluate yourself about how you have been so far during the day:

    • Have I been trying to listen to God?

    • Have I acted in a loving way to others?

    • How can I do better?

  • Plan moments of prayer throughout the day. Just a simple and heartfelt prayer, like: “Lord, I adore You.” or “Lord, thank You for helping me to live my life today as you want for me to live it.” This can help you to recenter your mind and heart on God.

Inspired by Mary’s fiat, how do you plan to turn your heart and mind more often to God?

F – Fortitude (Pray to the Holy Spirit for courage to give your own Fiat)

I – Initiative (Start immediately, do not wait to say yes to God)

A – Acceptance (Say yes to God, even when it is hard)

T – Thanksgiving (Thank God for calling you to do His will and for the example of Mary)
